  • Off to Toronto for a work event. My train is delayed by about 15-20 minutes, but it’s still so much better than flying.

  • Having recently learned the term “techo kaigi” —a retrospective on the planners one uses— I wrote a bit about my own Life Management System, and what it looks like for 2025:

  • Not a great photo technically, but my god Merlin has so much personality in his expressions that I couldn’t help myself.

A black-and-white longhair tuxedo cat peeks around the corner behind a white wall. One paw is slightly lifted and he bears a mischievous expression, like you’re going to find a surprise in your shoe later.

  • Didn’t have any pickled onions left for my Gibson, so I’m garnishing with a cornichon. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Otherwise: 6 parts Tanqueray, 1 part Noilly Prat.

A martini cocktail sits on furniture. A small cornichon garnishes the drink.

  • Bleh. I thought I was making progress on migrating away from NavigationViews in the WriteFreely app, and then I tried it on iPad.

Yeah, I think it’s going to need a much deeper refactor than I initially thought.

  • A couple of little tweaks coming to Per shortly.

Better iOS 18 compatibility is the main attraction here, and I’m dropping support for anything earlier than iOS 17.6 — once I’m happy that everything is still working as expected.

This screenshot shows an iPhone app interface, where a "New Update" notification is displayed, informing the user they are now on version 1.4.0, with a button to "See what's new."

  • Last week of August. Lots to get done and lots to get cracking on, especially if I want to hit that Q4 target for shipping the new app. The hardest part has been dedicating time for, well, pretty much anything outside of the usual day-to-day chores and errands (and even then, just barely).

  • After trying out a logo-based profile picture for a couple of weeks, I’m back to using a (recent-ish) post-haircut selfie instead. It just feels better to connect with people rather than brands, you know?

  • Quiet mornings with Merlin.

He’s always extra cuddly while I’m having my first coffee of the day. This is, in fact, a trick; this sneaky little bugger just sets the purrbox to 11 and gives you kitten eyes until he gets his wet food around 6AM.

    Still, it’s nice.

A tray rests on an ottoman in a dim living room. A man’s legs are up in the ottoman next to the tray, and a black and white tuxedo cat is curled up in the tray, its head using the man’s leg as a pillow. The mood is quiet and cozy.

  • Toying with site logos for the reboot of Two Common Cents Club, which will (hopefully!) become a community related to @cheqin, the personal-finance-as-self-care app I’m working on.

    Thoughts?

Two coin-shaped happy faces in a cartoonish style overlap slightly. The faces mimic the style used in the Cheqin app icon.
